On January 4th, 1969, the Ryde family will complete sixty years as our
tenants at the Tenterden Arms. The association started on January 4th, 1909,
when the present tenants aunt, Alice Rose Hyde, became the licensee. When
she died in October, 1941, George Frederic Ryde, father of our present
tenant, took over the tenancy until his death in July, 1941. As George
Edward Ryde, the present tenant, was serving in the Royal navy, the house
was run by his sister Marjorie and his brother in law, George E Arnott,
until his demobilisation in February, 1946, when he became joint licensee
with his sister.
Two years ago, George had to have his leg amputated. His wife stepped into
the breach and not only supervised the bars but also looked after the
cellars. His sister, Marjorie, died in January, 1968, but despite these
misfortunes and his physical handicap, George still works in the bar and
offers a cheerful greeting to everyone.
