Aberfeldy Tavern, 357-359 East India Dock Road, Bromley E14

Bromley pubs history index

This pub was established in 1865. The address in the 1871 census is 29 Barking Road. This pub has an interesting history. It originally stood at 357 East India Dock Road. It was completely destroyed during the Blitz, but continued to operate nearby from a pre-fab. This continued until 1958, when the pub was eventually re-built nearby at 26 Aberfeldy Road, where it remains open today (2006). ** Now known simply as the Aberfeldy, it closed around 2013 and is currently boarded up (2014). * It appears to have opened again at 50 Aberfeldy Road, and is now a community pub called the Tommy Wheelers.

I am currently doing some research on the Aberfeldy estate and its pubs. My name is Liz and I run a little pub on the Aberfeldy with my friend Nick. It is only a small pub in an old shop but we are currently trying to get a new premises when the regeneration is finished on the estate. Our pub which was originally opened by a man called Gary hunter and is now run by us is named after Tommy Flowers who was born locally on Abbotts Road and who created the colossus computers which effectively helped win us the war***
