I have been given a transcribed diary of an ancestor Charles Peter Hardess, 1794-1870. In it is the diary entry with the date of November 1830: ***
"By mid Nov. they had left the farm and took over a Public House called the "Sign of the Rising Sun" in Sale Street, Bethnal Green and Charles paid down to a Mr. Rickman £20." - Diary of Charles Peter Hardess, transcribed...

I presume from this he became the publican. Unfortunately it wasn’t the best choice of occupations as from other diary entries he was quite argumentative and enjoyed a few too many alcoholic drinks!

On June 9th 1831 there is another diary entry: ***
They left the "Rising Sun" and took lodge at a Mr. Saabers [?] in Charles Street in the Commercial Road at 3/- per week."

She writes "I am living in Bethnal Green a new neighbourhood both to me and my dear husband, but has the business he has purchased here". *+
