Bethnal Green pub history index
Existed from at least 1805. It's a little tricky trying to work out the evolution of the pubs name. I have it as Turk and Slave (1839), Turkish Slave (1842 and 1843), Turkish Head (1844-1848), Turkish Slave (1851), Turk & Slave (1855-1875), then Jolly Butchers. Perhaps the name just wasnt very clear in the early part of the 19th century ; The address is at 141 Brick Lane at & before 1881 **

I was the son of Jack Mansfield, tenant of the Jolly Butchers 157 Brick lane
E1 and lived in this pub in the 1960's. The 'butchers' had an illicit
jewellery market in the saloon bar (entered from the side alley) we used to
open at 10am(should have been 12 mid day) and closed it around 3pm. *
