Duke of York, 64 Ellsworth Street, Bethnal Green E2

Bethnal Green pub history index

Historical London public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels.

Existed from at least 1881. The earlier address for the Duke of York was Blissett street or New York street, as listed separately. *

Now the Duke of York, 64 Ellsworth Street, E2 (2006) ** Demolished by 2008 and replaced with flats.*+

At its old address of 3 Grove Street. I finally found Grove Street on the 1853 map - on my 1916 map the street is marked as Shetland Street, and now it is Ellsworth Street! The address in 1911 and 1921 is at 6 Shetland Street. The pub closed in 2005. **

Duke of York, Shetland Street, Bethnal Green - in the 1920s

The photo is of a ladies outing from the Duke of York, and it was taken during the nineteen twenties. Both of my great grand mothers are standing either side of the clown. They both lived close by; one in Jersey Street, and the other in Shetland Street, in which the Duke of York was at the time. Twenty years ago my mother lent this photo to the then owner who had it enlarged and placed on the wall in the bar there.
