Abraham Knowles was an ancestor at the Hand & Marigold in Bermondsey.
He was the landlord in 1839 according to Pigot's, and then Arthur Knowles
was in Kelly's 1843. When his daughter was married in 1846, his occupation
was still publican, so I do wonder if Kelly's put his name down as Arthur by
accident, unless Arthur was a son or brother. He started off as a coachman,
and then gave up being a publican to go back to being a coachman by 1851. *+

According to the 1861 census, the landlord of the Hand and Marigold was my
great-grandfather, Samuel Dolling, then aged 26. In fact I have at home an
account book for this pub for the years c. 1861-64 and a printed note paper
head. **
