Hour Glass, 89 Upper Thames street, All Hallows the Less EC4

All Hallows the Less pub history index

The Hour Glass existed from at least 1811.

All Hallows the Less actually becomes part of All Hallows the Great. The church was actually destroyed in the great fire of London in 1666, and not rebuilt. This parish became part of All Hallows the Great, which was itself demolished in 1894. By the 1911 census, many of these listings are noted as part of St Sepulchre.

This pub was the brewery tap for the City of London Brewery, and is now demolished. ** In Upper Thames Street is a large brewery, formerly known as Calvert's, now as the City of London Brewery Company, Limited, and adjoining it is a tavern called the Hour-Glass, Years ago all the great London breweries had attached to them a " tap," where was retailed unsophisticated beer, as actually brewed, quite free from any manipulations under the hands of clever cellarmen or the tap of the New River Company. The Hour-Glass was the " tap " to Calvert's.
