E8 Hackney
Stations - London Fields and Hackney Downs (BR Liverpool Street), Hackney
Central and Dalston Kingsland Road (BR North London).
This guide covers the central part of Hackney, from Kingsland Road to Mare
Street and including those parts around the Town Hall and church. Other parts of
the borough fall into Clapton and Homerton and the western end is covered by
CAMRA's North London Guide. Much of the borough is covered by waves of terraced
housing, punctuated (especially in the south towards the Regents Canal) by some
more modern estates and the inevitable blocks of flats.
The E8 district has retained many of its original pubs and a good number still
display an interesting range of late Victorian styles. There are some
concentrations around the local markets, such as Ridley Road or Broadway
Markets. Many have an Irish clientele and music is a popular feature, although
sadly real ale is not as widely available as we would like and the beer range is
dominated by the Big Four.
