E6 East Ham
Stations - none. East Ham and Upton Park (District) are just outside the area
and Beckton (DLR) is expected to open during the currency of this guide.
Spreading along the Barking Road forming part of the sprawling mass of Victorian
urban development between Stratford and Barking or Ilford, East Ham also extends
downwards to Beckton and the edges of the Docklands developments. The two parts
are divided by the A12 bypass, south of which there used to be mainly derelict
land extending as far as Beckton Gas Works - once famed since its owners refused
to allow any electricity on the premises, even for lighting.
Now, a mushrooming growth of hypermarkets extends from the Ski slope (near the
A12) as far as the little community of Cyprus just north of the Docks. Pubs here
are few and the best range in the area is back on the Barking Road near the
station, where a good selection of Victorian town pubs near the well restored
Town Hall, gives some relief from the more suburban types elsewhere. However,
domination of the pubs by the Big Four is general - although guest beers are
starting to creep in.
West Ham United (a lesser known club than Leyton Orient) have their football
ground near Upton Park station.
