E3 Bow
Stations - Mile End (Central/District), Bow Road and Bromley by Bow (District), Bow Church and Devons Road (DLR).
The original Bow was a village around the ford over the River Lea, now replaced by Bow flyover, and in this area there still remains something of a village atmosphere, despite sufferings from bombing and road building. The large Tesco is far from anyone's image of the village shop, although many of the pubs still have a traditional atmosphere. For this guide the Bow area extends rather further, to Stepney in the west, Poplar in the south and Victoria Park in the north.
The railway and canal network shows its importance as the one-time gateway to London from the east, and amongst the Victorian terraces (and a few squares) the visitor will find a good range of 'corner locals' remaining. To an extent, the pubs have not suffered as much as other parts of the East End although this may reflect the greater mix of ownership, including a sprinkling of regional brewers houses. In other parts substantial development of flats has taken place with associated estate pubs mixed in with older survivors.
Taylor Walker have a strong influence here, much derived from their purchase of Smith Garrett in 1927 - which they then closed.
