At the heart of the East End, this is where people expect all those grimy 1950s
and 60s films have been set, with the pubs full of tough (but fair) villains
discussing their latest jobs "out west". Reality us more prosaic, but the local
pubs here are still amongst the friendliest in the area covered by this Guide.
However, the bad news is that whilst there has been a trend for forty years or
so to turn perfectly respectable pubs into discos with strange names (perhaps
aided by the relatively easy availability of late music licenses), not only is
it getting worse but the loss of the 'locals' has been accelerated by the large
brewers' programmes of closures of their smaller establishments in recent years.
Many of these are good examples of pub architecture of a hundred years ago and
worth a look.
Unfortunately the area is one of our worst for real ale and that that is
available has historically been dominated by the Charrington and Watney/Truman
(due to their large breweries in the East End), but watch out for the
enterprising free houses and smaller brewers' pubs, a recently expanding sector
and one which is deserving of support. The only notable local brewery in this
century was Wests, whose Three Crowns Brewery (with 60 pubs) was taken over by
Hoare (itself then bought by Charrington) in 1929 and closed. One or two pubs
still have relics of the company.
