Wix villagers are campaigning to get the White Hart restored and reopened. It is a Grade II listed building. It has wattle and daub walls within it. Two priest holes,
15th century carved fire mantle and a concealed area between two storeys that was used as a cock-fighting pit; although this sport was illegal, it is
believed that it was used up until the 1970s. This cock-fighting pit (the area which is concealed in between ground level ceiling and the first storey
floor) is now the only remaining concealed cock fighting pit in the country.
There are two re-constructed cock-fighting pits in St Albans, Herts and in Wales. Part of the building also used to be a butchers shop and a slaughter
house. An iron ring in one of the massive floor beams shows where animals for slaughter were tethered for pole-axing.
The building has over 400 years worth of history and was mentioned in the Doomsday Book. ***
