I see that Kellys Directory have made an error. My grandfathers name was Ernest Edwin Askins, not Ernest Edward Askins. (I have a copy of his birth
certificate). He was born 6.8.1878 at 16 Great Hermitage Street, St. George in the East. His father was Ernest Albert Askins.
In 1911, Ernest Edwin Askins was at 24 Upper East Smithfields; the Phoenix
Ernest Edwin Askins was the licencee of this pub until he died on 28.10. 1934 having taken it over around 1911.
After Ernest Edwin Askins died, his widow Elizabeth Askins moved out of the Albert and went to run the Bell Inn in Danbury.
Both Ernest Edwin and his widow Elizabeth are buried in Witham. *
