In 1768 the tenant was Francis King, Yeoman of little Braxted who died C1801. His executors, William Sims and Robert King
sold the house and land in 1810 as follows:
" The Public House called Wickham Chequers and arable close of 1 1/2 Acres
to the occupier Alice Matilda Peppercorn for £627.00. She died in 1818 and
the occupier John Boltwood, Victualler, became the tennant. He mortgaged the
property to William Sims for £600.00. Sims died in 1823 without issue and
his widow Sarah Sims was admitted by mortgage rights. She died in 1853
leaving the estate to her niece Charlotte King, Spinster of Witham. Henry
Golding Barrett was the occupier." *

Arthur Borrett Williams was born at Langford in 1858, when his father John
was farming there, and before HE took on the chequers between 1867/70. It does
look as if it passed from father to son; Arthur married Mary Marven ( his
1st cousin) in late 1881. Clearly the Borrett name comes from the previous
tenant Henry G B., BUT, there’s no family link on any side that I can yet
find at all to explain why Arthur had that second name. By 1891 Arthur B
Williams is back to being a farmer at Langford with no mention of publican
on his census entry…
