"Henry New was born John Henry NEW but went by the name of Henry and he was born 1836 in Stratton St. Margaret, Wiltshire. At the young age of 20 he sailed to Australia on the ship “Hindostan”. He married my gggrandmother, Alice Stewart Grant FORDYCE in 1865 and is listed as a blacksmith and goldminer on his marriage certificate. In 1866 their first child, my grandmother, was born. The story goes that they discovered a gold vein that ran under the shanty where they were living. They moved the sickly newborn and weakened new mother out of the shanty to get to it. They got the gold and at 3 months old my newborn grandmother was on her way to England with a nanny and a goat to help take care of both mother and daughter who were still sick. Alice apparently hid the gold in her bussel so as not to be robbed. They settled a short time in Stratton St. Margaret Wiltshire then moved to Mile End in Walthamstow. John Henry and his wife had 6 children. "*
