My mum lived here during the WW1 with her parents and sister (Hannah), indeed
mum told us how they were at the Variety Theatre (watching musical artist Dan
Leno) when half way through his performance, the curtains were closed and an
announcement was made for everyone to go home immediately as the Zeppelin was
flying up the Thames with gun firing and small bombs (grenades) being dropped.
Mum said that she and her sister raced home, hearing the droning of the
airship's (five-valve Maybach I believe) engines droning in the background. She
told us a local farmer was firing his shotgun at it - though hopelessly out of
range.
Mum also told us that the East India House organised a trip to Cuffley (Potters
Bar area, I believe) quite soon after to see the first Zeppelin's burned out
shell, days after Leafy Robinson( Canadian airman) shot it down - winning the
DFC, I believe.
Mum (Eleanor Jones -nee Scott) lived to be nearly 95. with us just a few miles
from Cannock, Staffs where the five Zeppelin crews bodies are interred in the
German war-grave cemetery.
She enjoyed life at East India House very much, apart from falling down the
cellar steps which stopped her going to school for three formative years.
Although born at Holbeck in Leeds she always liked to be thought of as a
Londoner.
She married my father , a Leeds Pal volunteer of the Somme & Ypres and lived in
Birmingham area together for 43 years. ***
