Mr S P Thurston arrived at the Chobham Arms, Chobham Road, Stratford in 1924 when his stepfather took over the licence. He was twelve years of age and has lived at the house ever since, becoming the tenant when his mother died. During the last War, he was in the engineering branch of the RAF Fighter Command, serving under Douglas Bader for a considerable part of the time. His chief hobby is car racing and he raced at the Brooklands track before the war.  - Black Eagle Journal [1958] ***
