Seated: Constance Mary Lily Hughes (b. 4 April 1904 d. 1996), Mary Ann Elizabeth Hughes (nee Allaway b. 15 July 1880 d. Feb 1970), on her lap is Grace Catherine Ann Hughes (b. 4 May 1906 d. 2000), William Matthew Edmund Hughes (b. 1902 d. 1920) – and the dog Carlo who was born the same day as Grace. ***
There was a ¾ size billiard table at the pub, which moved with the family to their new home in Southend-on-Sea. During the war it was used as an air raid shelter, with chicken wire put around the legs. If the bomb blast didn’t kill you, the slate collapsing on you would have! When my Aunt Grace moved into a smaller house, the table went to my Mums in Berkshire, with a room having to be specially built for it. It is used all year long, for meals and especially for the Howes Christmas challenge Cup. ***

I found my great grandparents John Brace as the Governor of the Bricklayers
Arms in Stondon Massey, Essex. I was born and raised in Stondon Massey until
my parents along with my siblings and myself moved to America in 1949. *
The photograph is of my great grandparents along with other family members that include my grandfather (Bertrum L Booty) and grandmother (Alice Brace Booty) my mother (Thirza Booty Lawlor as a young girl) and my uncle (John L Booty as a young boy) together with other members of the Brace Family standing in front of the Bricklayers Arms, the year would be about 1915. *
