Licence of the Canteen, South Hornchurch, was transferred from Mr E R Blewitt to John Grover
Essex Herald 14 September 1875
In reference to the Canteen at Hornchurch, Mr Rawlings opposed the renewal on the grounds that John Grover, the applicant, had been convicted of a felony.
Mr Preston admitted that Grover had been convicted of felony 13 years ago, and that he was thereby prohibited by the act from holding a licence.
Mr Blewitt always understood the man to be most respectable, and never knew of this conviction, or ge would not have let him the house. Mr Preston asked the bench to withhold the licence for a fortnight until a new tenant was secured.

Licensing Session February 18th
Mr F J Hunt applied on behalf of Mrs Kathleen Maud Devison, of the Canteen, Hornchurch, for permission to sell wine on the premises.
Mr F Mullis opposed on behalf of the licensees of the Phoenix, Angel and Cherry Tree Hotels; and Mr C W Wood on behalf of the temperance interests.
Mr Hunt said there was a great demand for wine by the officers of the Territorials who visited the adjacent ranges, especially during the summer months from March till the end of October.
It was a private beerhouse, and had nothing to do with the war office, as its name might imply.
The attitude taken by the Territorial Association was that so long as they could get accommodation at this house they would be pleased to patronise it, but if they could not get accomodation, they would, under their powers, provide for themselves.
The Bench after retirement announced that the application should be granted.
