My husband's 4G Grandfather was Robert KING, a carpenter by trade and latterly a Brewer. He possibly came from Bishops Stortford, and settled in Nazeing in 1767 when he became a copyholder of "Harts", or the "King Harold 's Head", Nazeing as it is known.

Robert KING acquired a great deal of property in Nazeing, and through the minutes of the Board of Trustees of Nazeing Wood Common and the land tax assessment returns, it is known that he actually built the present King Harold's Head Inn together with a brewhouse in 1797. Robert was the founder of King's Brewery, Nazeing, which was taken over by his sons, Thomas and William KING, after his death in 1817.

Thomas KING, my husband's 3G Grandfather, was the younger of the two brothers; he died in 1839 and his share in the King Harold's Head etc was left to his son George KING (my husband's 2G Grandfather), who was also a Brewer. On 18th April 1850 George KING sold his moiety of Coburg Cottage, Nazeing (now known as Warwick House) together with his share of the King Harold's Head to his uncle William KING for two hundred and twenty pounds. This was probably because George KING, alas, had embezzled some money from his sister's inheritance and the ensuing litigation ensured that this branch of the family ended up broke and worse, without pub or Brewery! George KING died at Nazeing in 1860, at which time the debt was passed on to his poor son, George William KING, my husband's Great Grandfather. **
