Maypole, Messing
Kindly provided by John Wood
he man second from left is 'Pole' Goody, landlord 1902 -1925 local children used to call to him to 'climb that pole!' One of my Dices, Robert Dice is on the left of the bearded man, he looks about 50 or so here, so that would make this pic about 1910-15. - Colleen

This pub is now in Tiptree
25th June 2000
The Kings Head was also known as the Maypole. Possibly because of a May Pole being situated on the surrounding grounds. It's name seems to have officially changed to The Maypole Inn around 1894. Ceased being a pub in the early 1990's and has been a Chinese restaurant ever since. It has been through various name changes and is currently called The New Maypole.

Arthur Joseph Goodey is in the first picture; and also Arthur Joseph Goodey & Walter Lawrence, at Maypole Villa. This is opposite the Maypole, and after Arthur's retirement.
He married Eliza Ellen, and took over control of the Abberton Lion, then in October 1894 he became the Licensee of the Maypole. Initially his father supplied Arthur with beer, having brewed it himself at the Alma, in Copford ; but later the Colchester Brewing Company supplied this. Josphs wife died in 1917, and he remarried later that year to Eliza Christiana Harris (Chrissie).
Arthur was known as "Pole O" Goody; the reason being another Mr Goody lived across the road, known as "Taddie" Goody
