Angel Commercial Inn, Kelvedon
Kindly provided by Colleen
3rd June 2001
From the December 1962 edition of "Essex Countryside" magazine, supplied by Elaine Commander:
"The Angel at Kelvedon, demolished in 1939 and rebuilt farther back from
the road because the corner it stood on was the "very devil"
according to a famous coachman, was a sixteenth century inn with
undeniable royal associations. William III was a frequent visitor
when journeying to and from Harwich. Bufton, a Coggeshall man,
recorded in his diary that on October 20, 1692 "King William III
went through Kelvedon and then he stayed and dined at the Angell."
During the time of the Napoleonic wars, in September 1811, the Prince
Regent with his brothers, the Dukes of York, Cumberland and
Cambridge, After reviewing the troops stationed at Colchester, came
to the Angel and partook of an elegant cold collation before setting
off for London with fresh post horses. The Nobility and much good
company came to the old house in the eighteenth century. It was the
only posting house in Kelvedon and a noted stopping place for coaches.
The original inn, although much altered, was still an old fashioned
house, with the upper storey projecting on part of the front.
Possibly one of the earliest records concerning the Angel occurs in the
quarter session rolls, where a presentment of 1854/5 states that
"one Thomas Levericke of Keldon at the sign of the Angell
keapethe great disorder of playinge in his howse at cards, dice,
tables and other unlawful games, and also that the said Thomas dothe
make his horse bread to light, in every pennyworthe xiijd. ounces. "
In July 1596 it was presented that "a certain disordered alehouse
in Keldon alias Esterford called the sign of the Angel that is
maintained and kept by 'Wymian' Robinson who doth use the same very disorderly."
