The 1901 Census shows Charles John Rowden at The Endeavour, Springfield; where his occupation is given as Beerhouse keeper & grocer. The sons have all gone and he's there with his wife Georgiana who dies in 1906. Two sons seem to do quite well in life & there seems to be a bit of snobbery when they list their father's occupation on their marriage certificates. One describes him as Hotel Keeper & the other as Gentleman. In 1911 he's living at Oxney Green, Writtle & back to his profession as Clock & Watch repairer/maker. His probate of 1918 shows him leaving just £45 18s 5d to his second wife whom he married in 1913. *
