* Provided by Tony Harris, the grandson of Thomas & Emma, who relates:
"Thomas had to retire about 1946 due to increasing ill health & they ran
off-licenses for a time after that. The Railway Hotel was on the east side
of the High Street immediately south of a level crossing across the High
Street; indeed it was possible to view the trains from the upstairs sitting
room of the pub, but not advisable to open the windows due to smoke! I spent
some time there during the war & occasionally as a lad helped out
unofficially in the cellar well out of sight. At that time there was a yard
at the rear of the pub with various outbuildings/old stables & at the
eastern end of the site a bowling green. Although he spent all those years
in the lincensed trade Thomas was a teetotaller"
Thomas previously ran the Cross Keys in Chadwell St. Mary.
