Golden Wedding - Mr and Mrs Frank James Haggar of Park view, Terling, celebrated their golden wedding on Monday. They were married at Faistead Church on March 9, 1886.
Mr Haggar was born at Springfield, Chemsford, and was apprenticed to the leather trade with Messrs Beech ad Sons, by whom his father was employed. He eventually travelled all over the country at his trade, and then took over the licence of the Square & Compasses, Fuller street, near Terling, one of the smallest beerhouses in Essex.
After 15 years Mr and Mrs Haggar undertook the management of the Rayleigh Arms, Terling, where they remained for twenty years, including the years of the Great War. They retired 14 years ago.
Mr Hagar is 74, and Mrs Haggar 68. She is the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Walter Wright, of the Laurels, Great Leighs. One of her brothers, Mr E W Wright, of Great Leighs "gave her away" at her wedding. Mr Haggar has been a keen cricketer; once he scored eighty runs against MCC, and on another he topped the century. For many years he assisted the Terling Club.
Mr and Mrs Haggar had two daughters, but both died. A treasured possession is a silver bowl (James Istyle) presented to them by the officers of D Squadron, Bedfordshire Yeomanry, 1914-1915, in appreciation of services rendered during the Great War, when many troops were in training in the district.
