I knew the Anne Boleyn in the 1960’s - even worked there in 1964. At that time Walter How was the guv’nor. He was quite elderly and his reputation was that he had been there for many years. I guess Alice How must have been his mother. *

The saloon bar was oak panelled. Local lore had it that during WW2 the fighter pilots from RAF Rochford opposite the pub (now Southend Airport) used the pub and wrote their names on the walls. These would have included some quite famous ones during the Battle of Britain. Dear old Walter, the story goes on, had no more sense than to panel them in after the war. Interesting to wonder if some history still lurks there. *

Walter smoked a pipe specially designed for use with dentures: it had two 90 degree bends to enable the weight to rest on the chin. He drank about 14 pints of mild and bitter on a normal day and lived to be 80, so I hear. He kept the most beautiful pint of Charringtons IPA I ever tasted. God rest his soul! *
