I have found that my great, great Grand Uncle, Thomas Bacon Ramplin was landlord of the Hospital Arms, and later the Kings Arms, both in Crouch Street. Having researched Thomas further, I found him and his family on the 1861 census. His occupation is shown as 'Carpenter and Inn Keeper', the address for the family is 'Rain Bow Inn', Long Wyre Street, Colchester. **

I can find no record of this Inn, but since he was later the Landlord of the Hospital Arms and the Kings Arms, I suspect it may well have been his 'first step' into the Pub trade. Perhaps it was just the 'front room' in his house! By 1867, and in 1871, he is at 5 Wellington place - the Hospital Arms. **
