The photo shows Thomas William Wharton, the landlord standing outside. He was my great grandfather and the original photo belongs to me. I think the date may be 1926-7. I also have another of him and some of my  family outside the Mermaid inn, Colchester taken when he was the licensed victualler in about 1922. *

11/07/1863 Edwin Orphin gives notice to the Overseers of the Poor and Constables of the parish of St Giles, Colchester, regarding a beerhouse ‘under the name or sign of the Dragoon’. He states his intention to apply for ‘a License to sell Excisable Liquors by retail to be drunk or consumed in the House or Premises’ aforesaid, at the General Annual Licensing Meeting to be held at the Town Hall on 3 September 1863.

The property was owned by John Hart Bridges and Henry Cuthbert of Ipswich, brewers and wine and spirit merchants. Orphin has occupied the premises for six months and has used it as a beerhouse and residence."*
