My father was Albert Victor Alexander Gregory born on the 10th September
1896. On my parent's marriage certificate in 1923 my father is listed as a
hotel manager and my mother as a nurse. I do not know when my father started
working at the Duke of Cambridge but my brother was nine years older than
myself and he did remember living at the pub (he had a nanny at that time).
I recall seeing a sepia photograph of my parents standing in the doorway of
the pub. In 1916, at the time of signing up for active service, he
listed himself as a barman at 5 Chrisp Street, the
Guy Earl of Warwick.***
During my childhood it was mentioned that my parents had been involved with
a total of five pubs but the only names I can remember are - The Angerstein
in the Greenwich area, and The Three or Five Bells in the Epping area. I
remember my mother telling me that the reason they left the Duke of
Cambridge was because a sugar factory opened nearby and a level railway
crossing was installed which reduced the flow of customers. ***
