"The smithy at Church End, Broxted was run by my Barltrop forebears from at least the early 1700s until at least 1861. At some stage a beer-shop was established alongside; but I do not know when. It was clearly well-established by the 1840s - for in 1844 the owner, Moses (who was farmer, blacksmith and shop keeper as well proprietor of the beer-shop) sold it to Hawkes and Co of Bishop's Stortford - but under a lease-back arrangement whereby he continued to run it, but with an undertaking that he would sell only the company's beer and no longer brew his own. By 1853 another Barltrop, Aaron (b.Broxted 1810), was running the beerhouse. Moses was born on Broxted in 1777, and died in 1860. I do not know when the beerhouse was given its name; but the earliest photo I have of it, taken c1878, clearly shows it as 'The Bell'."
